Okay, Frankie hadn’t expected this today. Not at all. Reagan may only be just a short distance from the cottage, but Frankie had never felt so alone as she had over the last couple of days. She’d sat at home all week, contemplating calling Reagan. But she couldn’t knock on the door and face potential rejection.

When she left Dawn’s house, Frankie had stopped at the nearest supermarket and picked up some flowers for Reagan, but as she cut the engine outside the cottage, she quickly backtracked on her decision to hand them over. Now, those flowers sat in a vase on Frankie’s kitchen worktop. They looked pretty, but they really weren’t her. Still, she wouldn’t hand them over to Reagan. Dawn had insinuated that Frankie came across as desperate, so now she was steering away from that.

Frankie had decided that she would change who she was in order to make other people happy. It didn’t feel right, but it seemed the logical thing to do. She never wanted to make anyone feel uncomfortable in her presence, least of all Reagan.

You know she doesn’t feel uncomfortable. She told you she wanted you. You’re the one who didn’t show back up after speaking to Dawn.

Frankie shook her head; this was a waste of time.

She carried the salad bowl out into the garden, her sunglasses covering her eyes as she did so. Reagan sat quietly at the outside dining furniture, but Frankie felt Reagan’s eyes following her every move.

“Okay, so I have chicken, burgers, steak, sausages for Frog, and some marinated pork. Oh, and baked potatoes. Pitta bread. Basically, whatever you want.”

“You did all of this for just you?”

Frankie lifted a shoulder, distributing some salad from the bowl to her plate. “I would have just used the leftovers for work the rest of the week.”

“And here I am, eating your lunches.”

“No, not at all. I put extra on. There’s plenty, trust me.” She pushed the salad towards Reagan. “Help yourself.”

Frankie turned her back, collecting the grilled meats from the BBQ. Frog would have to wait a while until her share had cooled, but Frankie was ready to tuck in. She’d thought about this all day.

“So, how come you were walking Frog so late in the afternoon?” Light conversation, that was what Frankie would stick to. Nothing had to be complicated, it was only food together.

“She’s been a little bit lame the last couple of days,” Reagan explained. “Rather than take her on one long walk, I thought shorter ones would be better. Then it will keep her loosened up, you know?”

“Sounds like the right idea to me. Has she injured herself?”

“Not as far as I know.” Reagan smiled when Frankie offered a plate of meat. “This looks really great. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a BBQ.”

“Well, enjoy it while you can. The weather is going to turn soon. We both know that.”

“Mm. Have you been warm enough at night?”

“Warm enough?” Frankie’s forehead creased. Is Reagan offering to keep me warm? “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“The temperature can really drop in the evening.
